In a long line of market-based reforms to education, the Ontario government is now offering tax incentives for citizens who wish to explore private educational options. This decision is alarming on a variety of levels. It reinforces the mistaken notion that education is an individual service or commodity, instead of a public investment and a social good. It eliminates the legislated guarantee that all children have the right and the opportunity to attend quality public schools--whether they can afford to leave their communities or not.
