Since 2000, the CCPA-NS has stimulated the dialogue on Nova Scotia’s economy through its alternative budget document, a tool to assess the fiscal situation and the choices available to governments in Nova Scotia. Provincial budgets, like all public policy, are about choices and values. Through the budget, our governments make important choices that have serious implications for the everyday lives of Nova Scotians, now and in the future.
In Nov. of 2009, the Nova Scotia office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives hosted a conference in Halifax, named "Visioning Nova Scotia in 2020: Advancing research and policy for sustainability". Its purpose was to identify the key issues facing the province, and envision the kind of policy decisions that would help solve those problems.

The CCPA-NS’ second annual fundraising gala and 10th anniversary celebration (November 20) was a great success with good food, an excellent speaker and dancing to live music. The founding director of CCPA-NS, John Jacobs came back to Halifax to reflect on CCPA-NS’ successes, reminding us how important it is to create the needed space for democratic debate and dialogue no matter which political party is in power. Dr. Rita Deverell spoke eloquently and with a sense of humour about her experiences creating space for diverse voices in media. She challenged the crowd to think about how we can best move forward to ensure that the airwaves are inherited not by a select few. Thanks to everyone for making this gala a great event.
CCPA not only does first-rate research; it also connects with the real world by putting powerful information in the hands of advocacy groups and by presenting intelligent, progressive ideas in the media. It is a BC jewel and I urge everyone to support it.
