Not only have Canada’s “big five” banks continued to finance the fossil fuel sector since Canada committed to the Paris Agreement on climate change, their support of the industry has continued to grow.
This report shows that Canada’s big banks and the fossil fuel industry are deeply intertwined and that the banks have the potential to make a real impact to help Canada meet our emissions reduction targets. As long, however, as the banks and fossil fuel sector continue their close relationship, progress towards being a climate leader will be difficult.
