CCPA-Ontario Director

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ Ontario office (CCPA-Ontario) specializes in provincial and municipal issues. We deliver original, independent, peer-reviewed, and non-partisan research focused on income inequality, decent work, and the role of government in pursuing progressive public policy solutions.   • Salary range: $86,000 – $93,500 plus benefits.

ROLE OF THE ONTARIO DIRECTOR

Under the general direction of the CCPA’s Executive Director, the Ontario Director plays a leadership role in: developing strategic priorities for CCPA’s Ontario research; ensuring outreach and engagement with key partners, donors, and stakeholders; and, overseeing the administration of the Ontario office.

The ideal candidate has: (1) deep knowledge of Ontario provincial and municipal public policy issues; (2) a progressive analytical standpoint; (3) skills and commitment to work with a small team to ensure the high visibility of the CCPA-Ontario in public policy debates and to marshal the resources needed to ensure long-term stability; and, (4) demonstrated expertise in coordinating or conducting research that is accessible to a broad audience.

The role’s main functions are:

  • Providing strategic direction.

    • Working collaboratively with CCPA-Ontario researchers and the Ontario advisory board, the director sets the strategic research and communications direction for the Ontario office. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience creating a long-term strategic plan while coordinating the ongoing work plans of research staff and ensuring researchers have the supports they need to thrive. We are looking for a creative, strategic thinker who excels at problem-solving.

    • The director is also the key liaison between the national and Ontario offices of the CCPA, including contributing to the national CCPA agenda by helping define priorities, participating in joint projects, and aligning activities to ensure organizational impact.

  • Driving strategic communications and research.

    • The Ontario Director coordinates research and communications initiatives of the Ontario office supporting and complementing the work of other staff and working in coordination with the National office which provides key supports.

    • The Ontario Director is responsible for managing CCPA-Ontario's systems that support high quality publishing, media relations and digital/online communications, including media appearances and leading crisis communications when needed.

    • The ideal candidate has either expertise in strategic communication or a proven track record in policy-relevant research.

  • Building and nurturing key alliances.

    • The CCPA doesn’t lead movements; rather, it feeds movements with critical policy analysis, top-notch research, and solutions-oriented narratives. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience building and nurturing alliances within labour and social justice movements. The Ontario Director coordinates research roundtables and other activities to grow and strengthen the office's vibrant network of labour, social justice, academic, student and other civil society organizations.

    • The Ontario Director also supports and works closely with the Ontario advisory board and works to ensure that it includes the expertise, skills and representation that will provide the best possible advice for the CCPA.

  • Stewarding donors.

    • The Ontario Director is the lead fundraiser for Ontario, responsible for: (1) coordinating and implementing an annual fundraising strategy that includes the Ontario Solutions Fund; (2) developing supportive online fundraising tactics and e-appeals; (3) stewarding major organizational donors in Ontario, including producing annual results reports; (4) nurturing relationships with key foundations, which includes coordinating and writing research grant applications as well as writing detailed results reports; and, (5) deploying strategies to encourage donor loyalty, including organizing public events.

  • Overseeing administrative activities.

    • The director is responsible for a range of administrative activities, working closely with the National office including: developing and monitoring Ontario budgets, oversight of accounts payables and receivables, hiring staff and student interns, tracking and coordinating administration of vacation and staff training, and facilitating and supporting the work of the Ontario advisory board.

  • Other key skills:

    • Familiarity in identifying strategic opportunities to intervene in relevant public debates/stories via mainstream media and/or social media.

    • Strong interpersonal skills: collaborative, displays a high degree of initiative, tact, and discretion.

    • Effective time management, attention to detail, a high degree of organization, an ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a sometimes fast-paced environment.
