Poverty is deeply-rooted, spatially-concentrated, complex, often racialized, and not quickly solved. It damages, and in some cases ruins, the lives of those who it affects. We all pay the price for this. But is it true that nothing is working in the fight against poverty?

This year's State of the Inner City report shows that while a great many poverty-related problems remain, important indicators tell us that things are improving. After decades of decline, efforts in recent years by the inner city community, together with public investment, are gradually beginning to produce positive results.

This year's report outlines the changes in poverty in Winnipeg’s inner city over the past 15 years, and shares the results of focus groups with 46 Indigenous and Newcomer young people about their experiences with employment. The report also offers a set of recommendations to address the poverty-related challenges described by people with lived experience.
