On June 29, 2019, the federal government launched a public consultation on initiatives intended to “modernize” the Canadian regulatory system. Interested Canadians were invited to provide input on four current initiatives:
- Targeted Regulatory Reviews (Round 2)
- Review of the Red Tape Reduction Act
- Exploring options to legislate changes to regulator mandates
- Suggestions for the next annual Regulatory Modernization Bill
The CCPA’s submission to the consultation highlights how Canada’s existing regulatory doctrine contradicts the objectives of public interest regulation, which is to protect people, animals and the environment from harmful commercial activity. We propose ways the government could improve transparency and balance in regulatory policy, and recommend abolishing the deregulatory Red Tape Reduction Act, which includes a contested and unnecessary “one-for-one” rule introduced by the Harper government.
